The US Government Watched Its Figures in 1959

In “How Congress Fights The Weight Problem” by A.E. Hotchner in the January 4th, 1959 issue of “This Week Magazine” there was a big spread on Dr. Calver’s dietary recommendations to Congress:

When the 86th Congress convenes this week, it will immediately resume the bi-partisan fight against an old enemy—the legislative waistline.

In the battle will be a powerful support from a new weapon—a special low-calorie diet menu that will be served in the Senate Restaurant for the first time in recent history.

It was noted that “Congressman have just the sort of jobs—long hours, sedentary work and tension-creating problems—that harry so much of the white collar world.”
